I paid a visit to the St. James General Store yesterday, a wonderful place to browse, especially at this season. It's been there since 1857. I advise you to take home some of their famous chocolate chip cookies, the best I've ever tasted.
The St. James General Store, located on Moriches Road, is said to be the oldest continuously operating general store in the United States. It and a number of other historic structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as Saint James District.(Wikipedia)

On November 28th the funeral of Joseph DiBernardo, Jr. brought hundreds of firefighters to our area to honor this young man. Nichols Road was decorated with fire equipment and seven huge American flags. Times Herald article

Borders is closing. Death by Amazon. Or e-reader. Or competition from B&N. Or all three. At any rate, I had to stop in and see if there was anything good to pick up. Wow, 70% off, but I had to search for an hour before I could find one thing and only one thing of interest. All the rest was junk. Sad. I had a part time job here about 14 years ago, combining it with my library job (book overkill). So many memories were swirling in my head as I walked through the ravaged sections where the signs were wrong, the ceiling dripped water, and even the shelving was for sale. Sic transit gloria mundi ... no, not quite that important, but Borders used to be a wonderful, civilized place you could go and read for hours without buying anything, or enjoy a coffee-plus while people-watching, or purposefully order a book you needed. Or ... many other things.
For me the other book store in town is not an adequate substitute. But ... society gets what society wants (Whole foods, et al.).
Oh yes, the book set me back two dollars and ninety-one cents. Thank you, Borders. And thanks for the memories.

A LIPA crew came this morning. Although power went back on Tuesday morning, two huge trees, pitch pine and wild black cherry, were leaning on wires in the back. It was fascinating to watch the highly skilled guy in the bucket as he worked, first trimming out a workspace, then carefully tying lines, "driving" his vehicle wherever he wanted, instructing the men on the ground in both Spanish and English, and cutting the large branches and stubs so that the wood fell exactly right. Skill! No damage. No injuries. Finished in an hour and a half. How he and they exulted when the big ones came swishing down and hit the ground with a thump. I really enjoyed the reality show.

The service for Anne Scully

Sunday afternoon in all the rain several hundred people came out to celebrate the life of Anne Scully with words and music, food and band, art and fellowship. Dozens of her lovely paintings graced the walls of Neighborhood House. Her large family conducted a relaxed but emotional, rollicking but deeply-felt remembrance service for this wonderful person. Many people shared memories of her, including her great-granddaughter. Both our State legislators were there. The service concluded with group singing of some of her favorite Beatles songs, "Yellow Submarine" and "All You Need is Love". Tears and laughter the whole time.

Anne Scully

On the Fourth of July we lost a wonderful member of the community, Anne Corcoran Scully (page A15)
She was active in so many organizations. I knew her from Meals on Wheels. In the late 1980s we shared a delivery route. She was one of the most enthusiastic people I've ever met. It was a joy to know her.
I remember so many happy times, convivial meals at her house, and walks at West Meadow Beach with her beloved golden retrievers. Up until recently I would run into Anne walking with a small dog in Melville Park.
She will be very much missed.

I've just finished two days of jury duty in Riverhead. I was grilled and processed but ultimately not chosen. They chose 6 out of a pool of about 150 to complete a jury for this criminal case and it took two whole days.It's quite interesting to see how the system works, and courts are necessary, but the overall effect is depressing--so many sad stories, so much violent behavior brought to task, such stern surroundings, bars, security checks, windowless jury rooms, bright people making their living on other people's crime. Give me a library to work in and a forest to walk in and I'll happily do without the courthouse and all its troubles.

Real things from Camp Upton. I like to look at real things, even gas masks. The exhibit is presently in the library at the Grant Campus of Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

The site of Camp Upton is now home to Brookhaven National Laboratory with its high speed collider and such projects as "Pairing Quantum Dots with Fullerenes for Nanoscale Photovoltaics." Not visible, I guess.

Thought I'd try something different today. I visited the Eastern Geo Supermarket on Route 25 in Selden which specializes in Southeast Asian and other foods. This loaf of Afghan bread caught my eye. The taste is delicious; it is chewey, soft, full of flavor, good for soaking up gravy. Cost: 1.99. The skateboard shape of the package posed no problem with storage: just fold it over like fabric and slip it into the side of the frig door. My adventure for the day.

You are looking south at the merge of Stony Brook Road (left) with 25A. This is a very dangerous intersection. There is heavy traffic coming from Saint James and heading toward Old Stony Brook, and to merge into it you have to wait for an opening. Stony Brook Road curves just before the merging point so a driver behind you may only see you at the very last moment. You have to pray they will stop. If they are the least bit distracted they could plow right into your stopped vehicle. That is exactly what happened to me on March 14th when a flatbed truck rear-ended me as I was waiting there for an opening in the traffic. Crash!! I'm lucky not to have been injured. My car was terribly smashed up, though. I took this picture of the intersection a minute after I staggered out of my car wondering if it was about to burst into flames. Traffic signals at this location are urgently needed. I'm sure there are accident statistics to back that up. I know I'm one of them, and I won't drive there again until the lights go in.
