Shore Road: The pioneer spirit

Long-time Shore Road resident Mr. Wilson is tired of waiting for the Town, the State, or the County (whose responsibility is it anyway?) to repair the road and messed-up shoreline of Setauket Harbor, where large chunks of cement were dumped by the Town years ago for some reason (were they expecting high, crashing surf?) and where the road seems tilting because the retaining wall is no more. The road receives bandaids of repair now and then, but a real solution is not being addressed by our governmental powers.

So 80-year old Mr. Wilson decided to repair an area, making a stairway, across the road from his house so he can at least put his kayak in the water. I stopped to watch him work and have a chat today. He has been to the DEC office pleading for them to come and have a look at the deteriorating situation on Shore Road. So far, he says, no one has come.

He's doing a beautiful job, but the upkeep of the shoreline, isn't that someone else's responsibility? Doesn't it have something to do with tax money?

Maybe he will serve as the impetus to get the wheels in motion.
